Cloned meat, are you kidding me…..

It’s been a while since I crafted a note, so I figured now was the time to knock down the cob webs and see if I could still stir the pot a bit. This one is semi-political in nature, but more metaphysical I think. I was just informed of something that really blows my mind. First off, we have no only cloned Dolly, the Lamb….but there are literally hundreds of cloned animals in existence today. Secondly, the FDA has approved it for human consumption. Let’s say that again, the FDA has approved cloned meat for human consumption. Excuse me? I didn’t get notice of this. I was never informed that, hey….my steak tonight might be from a lab somewhere. From a religious standpoint….the food I ate today might not have had a soul. Wow.

When did our government get the power to push something like that through. Lucky for us cloning animals is still a young science, so it isn’t likely there will be any cloned meat on the shelves for a long while. The problem is, as it stands now…when that happens, we won’t have a way of knowing. There is absolutely no mandate for a label of any kind be used to designate cloned meat from normal meat. A company can, if they wish, label their food as coming from non-cloned animals, but the reverse is not a requirement. How are we, as humans, supposed to know if there are going to be any ill effects. What studies have been done to ensure us that there won’t be any repercussions for ‘playing God’. What has anyone at the FDA done to guarantee everything is A-OK with feeding cloned animals to the masses.

I’m sorry, but I think someone very high up dropped the ball on this one….and I think the FDA should rethink the stance, or lack there of, on this entire issue. As far as I’m concerned, I could go the rest of my life not eating a cloned animal and I’d be better for it.
